Jim Schaller has handled cases in a variety of areas, from medical malpractice to the toxic and environmental insurance coverage matters in which he largely specialized for over two decades to the representation of other lawyers and law firms in legal ethics, unauthorized practice, and disciplinary matters which currently claim an increasing amount of his attention. He currently confines his practice to representation of other lawyers and law firms in legal ethics, unauthorized practice and disciplinary matters. He has tried over 100 cases to judgment in his 45 years with the Firm. A Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, he was District of Columbia State Chair from 1996 to 1998 and served on the College Board of Regents, representing the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland, from 1998-2002. He is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.
Jim has served as an expert witness in legal malpractice cases and is a frequent lecturer and writer on techniques and teaching of trial advocacy, litigation and negotiation ethics, insurance coverage for environmental hazards and toxic torts, Peer Review and Self-Critical Analysis privileges, Investigatory Impropriety and the handling of Expert Witnesses and Consultants.
He has served three separate terms as President and Managing Director of Jackson & Campbell and former member of the Firm's Ethics Committee (he was its founding chairperson). He headed the D.C. Bar Committee which re-wrote the District's Rules on Unauthorized Practice of Law and received the Bar’s Award for Best Bar Project, 1995-96, for that work. He chaired the UPL Committee of the D.C Court of Appeals for 8 years. A frequent faculty member for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, he served on its Board of Trustees for nearly 10 years. He is an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University Law Center where he teaches a LL.M. level course.
